Mobilizing for Better Health

Mobile devices are the standard for using social media, paying bills, finding directions, booking restaurant reservations, and many other life-easing functions. According to a Pew Research study, 31% of cell internet users do most of their internet browsing on their phones. Even more telling, 43% of those earning under $30,000 a year do most Internet browsing on their phones.

So shouldn't smart-phones or tablets be a great source for health reform information and health insurance enrollment too?

And so, we're happy to announce that Illinois Health Matters has gone mobile. Take us on planes, trains, and automobiles – if you're sitting in the passenger seat, that is. We hope this will help make our resources available to people from all walks of life – irrespective of whether they use the web on a desktop computer, e-reader, smart phone, tablet, or other device. As you may know, HealthCare.gov is also keeping with the cause of making health and healthcare accessible to everyone by moving to a mobile site for open enrollment round 2.

But as we welcome these changes, let's not forget about Medicaid and ABE. The Application for Benefits Eligibility is not yet mobile-ready. We need to keep working to make sure that a person's method of Internet access is not a barrier to healthcare access. Illinois, will you see navigators and brokers carrying tablets in the near future?

From our blog

Illinois Entrepreneurs Need Employee Choice By including employee choice in the SHOP, the Affordable Care Act reverses a longstanding market trend that left small employers on unequal footing.

These kinds of benefits have historically been reserved for large businesses and public employees, while small businesses often have to offer a “one-size fits all” plan with added cost and fewer benefits.

Based on the Small Business Majority’s opinion polling, it is clear small business owners want to offer this to their employees. The Small Business Majority found that two-thirds of small employers believe allowing employees to choose from multiple carriers is an important element of the SHOP. And for small businesses, this component is fundamental in distinguishing the new SHOP marketplace from the outside health insurance market. Read more...

On our site

In addition to making the site usable on handheld devices, and a bit simpler and airier, we have added a few new things. As we know, providers are the connecting link between reform and the patient – and now they have their own Healthcare Providers section at IHM. For the small business owners who may find the SHOP confusing, our Small Business Initiative now has some Case Studies that present the options in a human and accessible way. And for those who want to browse the full extent of IHM's topics, the new Topic Index, with a capsule description of each; it is like a mini-course in health reform all by itself!

In case you missed it

The number of Americans without health insurance is down about 25%. That's between 8 million and 11 million people.

Open enrollment is knocking at our door and will be gone before we know it. Time to act fast.
